ROCHELLE HENDRICKS, ACTING SECRETARY OF HIGHER EDUCATION
New Jersey’s first secretary of higher education, Rochelle Hendricks, has more than 20 years of experience working on education issues in the Garden State. Appointed to the Cabinet-level post by Governor Chris Christie in May 2011, Secretary Hendricks had served previously as acting commissioner of New Jersey’s Department of Education, having been named to that post in August 2010. Prior to that assignment, Secretary Hendricks had served in the Department of Education as assistant commissioner for the Division of School Effectiveness and Choice, overseeing key reform initiatives and areas, including the Offices of Board Development, Small Learning Communities and School Culture, District Schools, Turnaround Partnerships, Inter-District Choice and Opportunity Scholarships, Charter Schools, Career and Technical Education, and Online Education. She had also served in the Department of Education in various other capacities, working as director of the Professional Development Office, manager of the Office of Policy and Planning in the Administration Division, assistant to the deputy education commissioner, and director of the Office of Vocational-Technical, Career and Innovative Programs. Prior to joining the staff of the Department of Education, she worked for over 15 years at Princeton University in numerous capacities, including assistant dean of students, director of the Educational Opportunities Program, and interim director of the Women’s Program. Secretary Hendricks began her career as a teacher in the Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School District before joining the Department of Education in 1987.
DENISSE OLLER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF UNANUE INSTITUTE FOR LATIN STUDIES
Denisse Oller is the new executive director of Unanue Institute for Latin Studies at Seton Hall University. She is a San Juan native, a journalist, writer and media personality. She went to Georgetown and majored in finance and theater and film criticism, with two minors (French and interpersonal communications). One of the most honored women in Spanish-language television, Oller is a prominent former journalist whose career spanned over 20 years. She served as national news anchor and correspondent for both Univision and Telemundo, where she interviewed prominent figures in politics and culture, ranging from Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter and Oscar Arias to Isabel Allende, Mario Vargas Llosa and Carlos Fuentes. Her familiar and reassuring voice broadcasted stories across the United States and Latin America, covering major news events such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Oklahoma bombings, presidential elections and the historic visit of Pope John Paul II to Cuba. Oller has received widespread recognition: 5 Emmy Awards, 9 Emmy nominations, 2 Gracie awards, 5 ACE awards, and the Edward R Murrow Award for excellence in investigative reporting. She was also recognized by Hispanic Business Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanic Personalities in the US.
