Rutgers

"The following are some of the Chapter's recent major activities and outcomes in support of ACE Net goals:

A series of thematic luncheons (4-6) throughout the year featuring guest speakers from various backgrounds including Latina Women and Women of Color. Examples of the themes are "A Community of Women at Rutgers-Past, Present, and Future", "A Sign of the Times: Women at Rutgers", "Breaking the Glass Ceiling", and "Coaching-Mentoring". A special program brochure is designed for each of these luncheons - see attachment. Using the University's electronic e-mail distribution program, announcements are sent to the entire University (New Brunswick, Camden & Newark). Attendance at the speaker luncheons averages from 40 - 70 women and men per event. Attendees come from all areas and levels of the University. Interest is based upon the topic and featured speaker. Those invited to speak range from accomplished women (and men) who have been with the University for many years, women recently promoted, and women newly hired into leadership positions. The guest speakers offer advice, guidance and inspiration for professional development, career management and advancement. These very popular speaker luncheons have contributed to expanding members' scope of personal contacts and networks that have led to new job opportunities and greater career awareness and growth. In addition, they have also provided the opportunity for the guest speakers to "step out" and share a heart-felt inside personal account of the who, what, where and how of their career accomplishments.

In 2005, the Chapter sponsored an end-of-the-academic year networking reception. Due to its success, this event will become a yearly event. Invitees were the guest speakers who spoke at the Chapter's luncheons throughout the past year, and members who attended at least one event that year. Attendance was free. Attendees were afforded the opportunity to informally meet with the year's guest speakers, network with one another, and share ideas for future programs with members of the committee. One idea offered during the reception resulted in a special panel presentation this past October. The panel consisted of several women who were asked to chair committees as part of the year-long Task Force on Undergraduate Education at Rutgers. Dean Barry Qualls, who headed up Sthe Task Force, shared with the audience the skills, qualities and experiences of the women panelists that led to their being selected to chair a committee on the Undergraduate Education Task Force.

The Rutgers Chapter hosts yearly on the New Brunswick campus, NJ ACENET sponsored fall and spring conferences and workshops. On March 10, 2006, the Chapter hosted the NJ ACE-NET's program for "Women of Color" featuring Shirley Pippins, President of Suffolk County College, NY."
